Adventures into the World of the Emu... Early
Beginnings...
1991, Sacramento, California State Fair,
Livestock Barns, cows, sheep, pigs, goats and...
...long-necked flat-headed birds sticking
their heads over an extended 7 foot high pen.
Bonnie Nelson
asked question after question talking about the advantages of raising
these prehistoric relics. Dennis (known as Dee) her husband,
wandered
around the barns looking at the beef and other animals. 3 hours later... Bonnie found Dee and said we were going to raise Emus and have little
emus. This was spoken from one who had been a "city girl" all her life.
We were living in a beautiful tract home in Sacramento. Bonnie had no
idea what it took to raise these animals and Dee had no experience with
birds. Dee has raised beef, sheep, dairy cows and goats along with bees.
We also knew you can't raise livestock in the city limits of Sacramento
without the proper permits and a large backyard doesn't qualify as
acreage.
After
searching for property we finally found 5 acres in Redding, California
to put 2 pair of Emus, (yes... 4 Emus). We put up a pair of large pens
to put these 4 birds in. We found the security we wanted, after all,
these birds cost us $11,000. EACH!
Clover
Lane Ranch Officially Begins...
We
unloaded our first pair in October of 1992 on a Friday afternoon. By
Monday evening we found our first "Emerald" (egg). OK! Where is our
incubator? We call a company in Texas and drove there and back in one
week. We learned by the seat of our pants and lots of help from many
helpful people, how to feed, care for and eventually process these
wonderful creatures.
In 1999,
we began to market the birds ourselves, with help from Kim & Craig Eakes
of Bella Vista. We went from $600 to over $40,000 in five years. In
2004, Kim & Craig decided to go in another direction and are no longer
